Rising Seniors: 2011 Graduates

Are you ready for your senior year? Do you know what you want to do when you graduate next year? This summer is the time to research your options and create a plan to achieve your dreams. Listed below are some things for you to start thinking about/doing in preparation for your senior year.

Promotion Requirements: Do you have enough credits to graduate? If you started 9th grade in 2007 or earlier, in order to be considered a senior for the 2010-11 school year, you must have 16 or more credits including no less than 2.5 LA, 2.5 Math, 2.5 Science, and 1.5 SS.

Do you plan on applying to college? Have you taken the SAT or ACT? Please visit their web page (links are to the right side of this page) for registration and test prep info. Upcoming Fall test dates are: ACT- Sept. 11, Oct. 23, and Dec. 11, 2010 SAT- Oct. 9, Nov. 6, and Dec. 4, 2010.

GA College 411 Have you registered for your FREE account? If not, do it! Through this site you can take various tests that will help guide you in your college and career planning for free. You can also research colleges from all across the country, see your HOPE GPA, research financial aid info, send high school transcripts to in-state colleges/universities, and more!

Important Application Dates for the BIG 3
University of Georgia: Early Action date- Oct. 15 Regular Decision- Jan 15
Georgia Tech: Early Action date- October 1, Presidential Scholar application deadline -Oct 31 (Everyone who has applied by Oct. 31 is considered for Presidential Scholar-no separate application)
Georgia State University: Early Action- November 1, Regular decision and scholarship deadlines January 15, Final deadline March 1

Also, Duluth HS can nominate 4 Emory Scholar candidates and 1 Goizueta Scholar candidate to Emory University. If you would like to be considered see Mrs. Strickland in the Depot before Oct. 1. (very high SAT or ACT score, high GPA in advanced classes and school involvement are important considerations)

Need A Counselor Recommendation? A request for recommendations is appropriate only when required for scholarships and competitive college applications. If your application requires a recommendation letter and/or a recommendation form filled out by a counselor, please follow these steps:
1) Complete college application.
2) 5 Weeks prior to application deadline see Ms. Strickland for the following: Senior Profile packet – includes a form for parents to complete, Teacher Input Forms, & Order transcripts—$2 fee & 48 hour processing period – Must order one transcript for EACH college application
3) 4 Weeks prior to application deadline: Complete Senior Profile and give copy to Ms. Strickland
Follow up with teachers about input forms to be emailed to Kathy Strickland
4) 3 Weeks prior to application deadline: Counselor will complete recommendation letter WHEN all of the materials listed above have been received

Interested in Georgia Southern?

Hey Seniors, Are you interested in Georgia Southern University but think your SAT or ACT test scores are too low to meet their admission requirements? GOOD NEWS! Apply for the Eagle Incentive Program (EIP) and get a chance to show you have got what it takes to be successful at their school. The program, which takes place during the summer (June 21 through July 23, 2010) gives students a chance to come to campus the summer before their freshman year and take three courses for a total of eight college credit hours. These are regular college-level courses and the credits earned count toward graduation. Upon passing these courses with a cumulative "C" average or better, students gain regular admission for the fall 2010 semester.

Eagle Incentive Program requirements include:
· Minimum 920 SAT composite score (math + critical reading) or 20 ACT composite score
· 2.0 cumulative academic high school GPA
· College preparatory curriculum

If you are interested in attending one of the sessions in the Depot (located in the Counseling Office, 300 building) please see Mrs. Strickland to get a pass. If the college rep is going to be in the lunchroom there is no pass required.

Educational Opportunity: @ Georgia State
Attention rising juniors and seniors interested in exploring the career of teaching math and science. Georgia State University is offering a free 3 week summer program -actually they give you a $200 stipend, a Marta card, lunch and a tee shirt!! Volunteer Position:
The Duluth Branch of the Gwinnett County Public Library is looking for students interested in volunteering. The students typically shelve books and work with the summer reading programs. If interested you must commit to a minimum of 20 hours. Applications are available at the Gwinnett County Public Library website or from Mrs. Strickland in the counseling office. During the week of June 6-June 11, students will stay on the campus of Emory University (Goizueta Business School) in Atlanta and participate in interactive workshops, panel discussions, tours, and networking opportunities to prepare them for the business world and beyond. This competitive program is open to rising Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors in the state of Georgia. We are looking for the best and brightest students in Georgia to gain leadership experience and business knowledge from 40 of Atlanta's most promising business and community leaders under the age of 40. Are you interested in receiving 9-13 Community Services hours on a monthly basis next year? Are you interested in working with teenagers at the Gwinnett Children’s Shelter?
